Help Protect Depots and Alberta’s World-Class Beverage Container Management System.

The future of Depots is uncertain. The Government of Alberta is proposing changes to recycling rules that, if adopted for beverage containers, would give manufacturers the option to design their own collection system and stop using Depots.

Depots are the backbone of beverage container recycling system in Alberta - and we have the best system in Canada. Our elected officials need to know this. Send our templated letter to your MLA. It will tell him or her why the Government of Alberta must protect Depots, and it asks for a meeting to give you the opportunity to tell him or her yourself.

Steps to Contact Your MLA

Step 2: Read the templated letter so you understand the ABDA’s position.
Step 3: Fill in the form that automatically adds your information to the letter.
Step 4: Click “Add Your Voice”.

If you meet with your MLA without an ABDA representative in attendance, please tell the ABDA about your meeting through our Report Back page. The result of your meeting will help the ABDA and other Depots plan for future meetings.

Why Contact Your MLA

The Government of Alberta is drafting legislation and regulations (i.e., the rules) that will make producers of products and packaging responsible for managing their materials at the end of their lifecycle. This approach to managing materials is called Extended Producer Responsibility or EPR.

If the Government of Alberta adopts EPR for beverage containers, then Depots could lose their standing as the sole collectors of beverage containers. EPR has not worked very well for beverage containers in other provinces. Alberta's current beverage container management system performs much better. We need the Government of Alberta to know this, and that Depots play an irreplaceable role in the success of Alberta’s system. Please contact your MLA as soon as possible.
